Everyone:

In preparation for a day off on Wednesday, please view the following video in class:

GOOGLE DRIVE (DOCUMENT) JOURNAL ENTRY
Today you will use complete a Google Classroom Assignment and write 2-3 sentences about how you might be able to serve your community or country someday.  This service does not have to be in the armed forces.  I want you to really think about how you can repay the gifts of liberty and freedom that you have because you live in the United States.  Consider the sacrifice of others, both in uniform and out, while this country grew and up to the modern era.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FOR VETERANS DAY 2015

3rd Herd - Prior to Deployment (Fall 2007)
Please talk to a veteran that you know.  This assignment is due prior to the end of Marking Period 1.  You must find a relative or friend that has served our country in the armed forces and interview them.  Find out when and where they served.  Write a one-page summary of the interview.  See the worksheet in your Google Classroom page.  Make sure to include how long they served, why they joined, what was the hardest and easiest part of their service, and what they feel about others serving.    Try to include a picture of the person in uniform if possible.  Please email this interview to me so I can print them and post them.  End your summary with how you feel about service in the armed forces and why it is important to serve your country in any capacity.

Thanks for your input on this project.

12 x 12 x 12 Response / Web Scavenger Hunt

Hello All:

Today you will be reading the following passage:

12 x 12 x 12 IMPRESSIONS
12 by 12 by 12 is the distance you are being judged by the people you meet every day of every week of every year of your life.
Your first impression starts 12 feet away. This is the distance people see what you are wearing and how you are acting. This is the first chance you have to make sure that people see you in a positive, accepting light.
At 12 inches away you are now about to speak. People will notice the minute details of the way your face looks as you smile, frown, or grimace. People are judging your looks, your demeanor, and the way you carry yourself. The way you shake a hand, smell to others, and present yourself are now under the microscope and you should be aware that what you are about to say will forever place a note in people’s head about your level of maturity.
Finally, the first 12 words you speak are a reflection of your heritage, upbringing, and education level. Whether you like it or not, the person you are interacting with is taking a mental picture of you for future reference. What kind of picture have you given them? How can you make a difference in how you appear? The mark we leave on the world is a made up of the thousands of appearances in other people’s memories. How you are perceived by others is the only yardstick we are all measured equally by. Make your impression a positive lasting one with others, and you will make your world a better place live in.

Once you have read the passage above (12x12x12) please open your Google Classroom and complete the document that has been placed in the SHARED WITH ME Folder on your Google Drive.  Write, in your own words, how you will change the way you act because of what you read.  Please write 3-4 sentences about how this will impact you and the impression you leave with others.

Once you have completed your worksheet and submitted it, you will work quietly on the following lesson:

JOURNAL ENTRY #5

Open your TECHNOLOGY JOURNAL in your GOOGLE Drive.  Create the following entry at the top of the page (above previous entries):

21 October 2015 (Today's Date)
Topic:  Heritage
Please read the following article "What Is Heritage" below and create a Journal Entry (4-5 Sentences) about why learning about your own family tree and heritage is important to you.  Title the entry "My Heritage".  Please include a brief description of where your family if from, and how you are going to spend time in search of your ancestors.

What is Heritage?

Taken from the following website https://www.umass.edu/chs/about/whatisheritage.html

Heritage is the full range of our inherited traditions, monuments, objects, and culture.  Most important, it is the range of contemporary activities, meanings, and behaviors that we draw from them.   Heritage includes, but is much more than preserving, excavating, displaying, or restoring a collection of old things.  It is both tangible and intangible, in the sense that ideas and memories--of songs, recipes, language, dances, and many other elements of who we are and how we identify ourselves--are as important as historical buildings and archaeological sites.

Heritage is, or should be, the subject of active public reflection, debate, and discussion.  What is worth saving?  What can we, or should we, forget?  What memories can we enjoy, regret, or learn from?  Who owns "The Past" and who is entitled to speak for past generations?  Active public discussion about material and intangible heritage--of individuals, groups, communities, and nations--is a valuable facet of public life in our multicultural world.

Heritage is a contemporary activity with far-reaching effects.  It can be an element of far-sighted urban and regional planning.  It can be the platform for political recognition, a medium for intercultural dialogue, a means of ethical reflection, and the potential basis for local economic development.  It is simultaneously local and particular, global and shared.
Heritage is an essential part of the present we live in--and of the future we will build.

 FAMILY TREE AND PERSONAL TIMELINE
Today you will design graphic organizers on Inspiration8/9.  Please create a Personal Timeline and Family Tree in a digital format.  You must create these from scratch using Inspiration 8/9.

YOU MUST CREATE A HAND-DRAWN VERSION BEFORE WORKING ON A DIGITAL VERSION ONLINE!

To start, use a blank piece of paper to list your birthday, list all the schools you have attended, list any significant events in your life (birthdays, deaths, weddings, graduations, holidays, family trips, honors, awards, or any other events you can remember) and the dates they happened.  Open Inspiration 8/9 and open a New Blank Document.  Begin to drag boxes into the timeline and label them in order.  Once you have created your first box with a date underneath, you can now select the box, copy and paste a new one next to it, and link them with an arrow.  Continue until you have listed all the events up to today's date.  You need to list 10-15 events to complete the project.

For the Family Tree, make a complete list of all of your parents, step-parents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, grandparents, and any other family members you can think of.  Now begin dragging in boxes and labeling them with each person's name and date of birth (if you know it).  Now list weddings in text between married couples.  Make sure to line up each placemarker with others in the same generation.  Make sure you include extended family (Aunts, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters, Etc.)  I would like you to do your best to include at least 3 levels of your family tree.  These should include siblings, parents, aunts & uncles, grandparents, and anyone else you might know.  Once you have your Timeline and Family Tree on one document, Go To FILE and EXPORT and save it to the desktop as an IMAGE (JPEG) File.  Upload the JPEG File to your Google DRIVE and SHARE the picture with me for credit.

See the sample below for some more clarity.  Good Luck!

- Mr. S

Steps to complete Timeline/Family Tree Project:

1. Open Inspiration 8 / 9 on your Mac
2. Click DIAGRAM Button to create a blank Diagram
3. Drag enough blocks into the workspace to allow for one block for each person in your IMMEDIATE Family.
4: Label Each Block with Person's Title (Dad, Mom, etc.) and First Name
5. Connect each block with who is related to who.
6. For the Timeline, you must drag in at least 15 blocks.
7. Label each block with event from your life.
8. Make a connection, in the order that the events occurred in your life, from one event to the next.
9. If you have not completed your work before class ends, SAVE your Inspiration File to Desktop and Upload it to Google Drive so no one can delete it.
10. Once complete, EXPORT your file as a Graphic Image and Upload the Picture to your Google Drive.
11. SHARE the Graphic Image (Picture) with Mr. S for Credit.  DO NOT SHARE THE INSPIRATION FILE!  You will only get credit if you SHARE the appropriate file on time.

How a 3-D-printer changed a 4-year-old's heart and life

Mia Gonzalez spent the first 3½ years of her life missing out. She had to skip day care and dance classes because she constantly had colds and pneumonia. When Mia could go out and play, she was easily winded and took multiple asthma medications to try to help her breathing.
After about 10 hospital stays, doctors realized that Mia had a malformation in her aorta, the vessel that pumps blood from the heart. The 4-year-old would need an operation to close off the part of her aorta that was putting pressure on her windpipe and making it hard to breathe, swallow and get rid of phlegm when she got a cold.
"We freaked out to go from thinking she had asthma to being told she needed to have open heart surgery," said Katherine Gonzalez, Mia's mom.
But Mia's malformation was complicated. The surgeons at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, where Mia was treated, might have been apprehensive about the procedure were it not for a new technology: the 3-D printer.

No longer 'inoperable'

Earlier this year, the hospital got a 3-D printer that makes exact replicas of organs that doctors can use to plan surgery, and even do practice operations. The printer uses images from patients' MRI or CT scan images as a template and lays down layers of rubber or plastic.
Dr. Redmond Burke, director of pediatric cardiovascular surgery at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, meditated on the model of Mia's heart for a couple of weeks. He showed it to colleagues for their input and even carried it around in his gym bag for quick reference.
Burke finally had the "Aha!" insight. Instead of making an incision on the left side for this type of heart defect, called double aortic arch, he should cut into Mia's chest from the right.
Doctors used a 3-D printer to make a model of Mia Gonzalez's heart.
"Without the model, I would have been less certain about (operating on Mia) and that would have led me naturally to make a larger incision that could possibly cause more pain and a longer recovery time," Burke said.
Using the model, "there was no doubt, and surgeons hate doubt," he added.
He attributes the model with saving the team and patient about two hours in the operating room because he was able to have a clearer plan to do the surgery.
Burke and his colleagues have created models for about 25 young patients with congenital heart defects. In the past, they might not even have operated on some of these patients because the surgeries seemed too tricky, but "it's very unlikely I will ever call someone inoperable (now) without holding a model in my hand," Burke said.
About 75 hospitals in the United States, and around 200 worldwide, have a printer such as the one used to make a model of Mia's heart, said Scott Rader, general manager of Stratasys, which sells the printers.
Although 3-D printers have been used clinically for the last 20 or 25 years to make prototypes for surgical tools and other uses, they only started churning out simulated organs in the last few years, Rader said.
Doctors have used the simulated organs to prepare for all kinds of tricky operations, such as surgery to remove a brain tumor or to correct a severe cleft palate, Rader said. Doctors can operate on them with regular surgical tools "again and again and again until you think of the optimal way to do surgery," Rader said.

'The biggest secret that nobody knows about'

The models can also help train medical students and explain complicated procedures to patients such as Mia and her family.
Eventually, the printers could be used to produce actual organs that can be transplanted into patients; just replace the rubber and plastic printer "ink" with human cells.
"We are going to see massive advances in the next five to 10 years of how to take the technology to this point," Rader said.
Mia's surgeon carried around a model of the girl's heart for weeks.
Simulated organs are "a disruptive technology which radically changes how we talk to patients, how we prepare for an operation, how we do the operation and how we teach," said Dr. Daniel B. Jones, professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School and co-director of the Simulation and Skills Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
However, the technology is not widely in use in hospitals or medical schools yet.
"This is like the biggest secret that nobody knows about," said Jones, who has done research on surgeons' impressions of using simulated organs. Even those who do know about the technology might feel uncomfortable showing patients a model of their tumor, for example, and discussing it with them in depth.
Hospitals are starting to invest in the technology, which is more realistic now that prices have come down, Jones said.
The printer and software usually cost in the range of $100,000, which is less than a CT scan or MRI setup, Rader said. He predicts that interest in the technology will continue to grow as research shows how using simulated organs leads to better surgical outcomes and shorter operating times.
The models have also been invaluable in helping patients and their families feel confident that they are doing the right thing, said Burke, who operated on Mia.
Seeing the model "made it seem like a simple surgery, it put you at ease," said Gonzalez, Mia's mom. "(Mia) was used to hospitals and IVs, but to explain that you're going to have surgery and be in pain, that is all different," and the model helped put it in perspective, she said.
Four months later, the surgery seems like ancient history to Mia. She has forgotten all about her surgical scar, her mother said, and had little pain. Although she has had some minor colds, none has landed her in the hospital. A month later, she was even able to participate in her dance recital.

Example of Mr. Scribner's Autobiography:
AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MR. SCRIBNER
I was born in Bloomington, Indiana.  I was raised in Indiana, Virginia, and  Missouri until I was in the Second Grade.  My family moved to Western Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.  I attended the Upper Perkiomen School District from 2nd to 8th Grade.  I was then transferred to St. Pius X High School in Pottstown, PA for grades 9-12.

Growing up in rural Pennsylvania had many advantages.  I was active in sports, outdoor activities, and once I was in Middle School, I was able to ride my bicycle just about anywhere.  I also had many part time jobs since the age of 12 to support myself.  I started working on farms in my area to make extra money.  I bailed hay, milked cows, and chased calves around the barn when I accidentally left the gate to their pen open.  I then spent time working for a stone mason who lived on our block.  I spent a summer lifting bricks and blocks, mixing cement and building scaffolding systems.  I learned a lot.  I also delivered papers, worked at local fast food restaurants, and did maintenance work on a local golf course throughout High School.

My grades were horrible throughout school.  I graduated at the bottom of the class from my high school despite scoring very well on standardized tests.  I was accepted at Shippensburg University in 1986 for a summer program called Act 101.  I was also accepted to the Antonelli School of Art and Design for my photography skills.  In hindsight I probably should have gone to the Photography School.  I did not succeed in college and partied too much.  Eventually I flunked out.  It was not all bad though, I was put in the position of needing to join the Army Reserve to help pay for school, and the leadership skills, training, and discipline would ultimately make that one of the best decisions I have made in my entire life.

I went to Basic Training in 1988.  I was stationed at Fort Jackson, SC for Initial training and Fort Gordon, GA for “Commo” school.  I made some of the best friends of my life while serving my country.  I have excelled at military training and went on to be deployed twice overseas after 9/11.   I am still very interested in the firearms training, first-aid, and other classes I was required to take.  My military service also allowed me to see the world and to really have an appreciation of what being born in the USA means.  I have seen the advantages that are taken for granted by others who have not had the same vision of poverty and war.  I am thankful for those experiences as well.

I was married in 1992 to my oldest son’s mother.  I was divorced and now am re-married to the mother of my other son’s.  My sons are 19, 7, and 5 and are awesome!  I just celebrated my 10th anniversary of my marriage to my wife this year.  We live in our home near King of Prussia, PA.
I began to try to be a teacher while at Shippensburg in 1987.  I wanted to be a history teacher, but found my way into other jobs as I needed more money to support a family.  I started in sales and customer service for various companies in the Philadelphia area in 1991.  With a new family and child to support, I took whatever job was available at the time.  I gradually, over the years, was able to turn one opportunity into another while moving from job to job every 3-4 years.  I got better at sales and more professional in my manners and appearance.  I have sold building products, health care services, engineering services, coatings and paints, and ultimately ended up as a kitchen designer and architectural sales representative.  I also went to Gwynedd Mercy College from 2004-2006 and finished my degree in Business Administration 20 years after beginning it at Shippensburg.

While on deployment in the Middle East in 2008, I was given the opportunity to take my Praxis (teacher’s) exams.  I scored very well with no preparation.  When I returned from overseas, I went back to Gwynedd and enrolled in the Teacher Certification program.  I also approached the School District of Philadelphia for a job.  I was given an Emergency Certification and allowed to teach in January of 2009.  I was at University City High School for 3 years and now I work here at Crossroads Accelerated Academy at Elverson!

In addition to teaching,  I coach many sports for my sons, I play volleyball and lead worship and missions teams at my church, and I spend time with my family as much as possible.  I am also a Boy Scout Leader for my sons.  I am interested in sports, video games, and construction projects around my home.  My family and I also enjoy spending time outdoors fishing, camping, hiking, and riding bicycles.
Foods I enjoy include anything grilled, ice cream, and spinach dip with pumpernickel bread.  I love to cook and enjoy cooking with my 7-year-old.  My goals are to complete my Masters Degree,  continue to coach and work with the Boy Scouts, improve the conditions here at Crossroads and continue to teach as much as I can.  Ultimately I might want to be a Principal or a Counselor as well.

Integrity (13 Characteristics)

13 Characteristics of People Who Have Integrity

1. They Value Other People's Time: They value their own time so they also value the time of other people. They know you have plenty of other places you need to be and won’t hold you up. If you spend time with them, it is likely they will thank you for that as well.

2. They Give Credit Where It Is Due: They do not take credit for things they did not do. They will always credit those who deserve it. If you help this person with a project he or she will likely mention your name so you can take credit for your work.

3. They Are Authentic: They are their truest forms. You won’t catch them in a lie or being fake.

4. They Are Always Honest: They are honest people that feel no need to lie as it is important for them to get to where they need to get in life honestly.

5. They Never Take Advantage Of Others: They are not the kind of people who will take advantage of someone else. They love to build people up and help them get where they need to be. Taking too much from someone else will never be an issue with someone who has a lot of integrity.

6. The Do Not Argue Over Disagreements: They will talk through things in a civil manner or not talk at all. You cannot and will not force this person into arguing over something completely ridiculous. I find this to be a very respectable trait.

7. They Give Most People The Benefit Of The Doubt: They try to see the good in everyone. I think this is because they feel like maybe there are more people in this world that also have integrity. That being said, if you take advantage of them too much they will get rid of you.

8. They Know When Something Is Bothering Someone: They have a great intuition that lets them know when something is going on. If someone is down in the dumps they will notice. Chances are they will actually do what they can to cheer you up.

9. They Believe In Others: They accept your word as truth until it is dis-proven. That being said, they do not take lying well. And once you lie to them, it is unlikely that they will ever take your word again.

10. They Apologize First: If they have done something wrong they will come to you and apologize. This is just how they are. They own up to their mistake and try to make things right.

11. They Are Humble: They do not quite know their own worth. While they are very important and do so much good they don’t quite see it. You should remind them of it.

12. They Do Good When They Can: They are always helping other people. They love to know that they have improved someone’s life. It gives their lives meaning.

13. They Are Always Kind To Those Who Need It: Giving kindness can go a long way. When someone looks like they need a little pick me up these people deliver. They can brighten up almost anyone’s day.

If you are someone who has true integrity, thank you for being who you are and thank you for all that you do. You really do actually make a difference in society, please keep up the good work. If you feel no one else is proud of you, know that I am.
