Inspiration 8/9 - Family Tree / Personal Timeline

ACADEMIC/LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Today students will create a Personal Timeline and Family Tree for themselves using Inspiration 8 / 9.  They will use paper and pencil to create an initial design and fill in information.  Once completed, they will create a digital version and submit it by adding a a Shareable Link from their Google Drive to our School Google+ Page.

All:

Today you will continue to design graphic organizers on Inspiration8/9.  Please create a Personal Timeline and Family Tree in a digital format.  You must create these from scratch using Inspiration 8/9.

To start, use a blank piece of paper to list your birthday, list all the schools you have attended, list any significant events in your life (birthdays, deaths, weddings, graduations, holidays, family trips, honors, awards, or any other events you can remember) and the dates they happened.  Open Inspiration 8/9 and open a New Blank Document.  Begin to drag boxes into the timeline and label them in order.  Once you have created your first box with a date underneath, you can now select the box, copy and paste a new one next to it, and link them with an arrow.  Continue until you have listed all the events up to today's date.  You need to list 10-15 events to complete the project.

For the Family Tree, make a complete list of all of your parents, step-parents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, grandparents, and any other family members you can think of.  Now begin dragging in boxes and labeling them with each person's name and date of birth (if you know it).  Now list weddings in text between married couples.  Make sure to line up each placemarker with others in the same generation.  Make sure you include extended family (Aunts, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters, Etc.)  I would like you to do your best to include at least 3 levels of your family tree.  These should include siblings, parents, aunts & uncles, grandparents, and anyone else you might know.  Once you have your Timeline and Family Tree on one document, Go To FILE and PRINT and save it to the desktop as a PDF File.  Open your email and attach the PDF File to an email to me for credit.

I hope whoever is covering my class has found the lesson plans on my desk.  There is a list of topics that were selected by the students for Public Service Announcements in the post below this one.  Make sure everyone understands that the PSA can be up to two minutes in length.  Each student must Import their Movie Marquise (10-15 second video) into the PSA and add them to the end (After the 30-60 second PSA).

PSA's are to be finished in IMovie, use the EXPORT TO DISK function in the SHARE tab to save a copy of the finished movie to the Desktop.  Then open your Google DRIVE and UPLOAD (Little Red Up Arrow Button) the Movie File to your GDRIVE.

Once your file is uploaded to GDRIVE, please click the SHARE button next to the file (or find it in the menu bar).  Change the permissions to View The File to ANYONE WITH LINK.  COPY the Link Above and email it to Mr. S.

Finally,  You MUST open your Weebly.com Website and Create a LINK (Text Headline or Button) to your Movie PSA.  You will not be given credit for the assignment until these steps are done.

 I will be posting updates from the Seminar I am at on Google+.  Make sure your friend me (Circles) and follow along.  There will be extra credit for anyone who answers the questions about this seminar in an email to me.  Check this website often over the weekend for updates as well.  Question:  Think I could talk the School District of Philadelphia into buying me a classroom like the one to the right?  WOW!

Public Service Announcement Project

Public Service Announcement (PSA) Rubric

"There are many different definitions for a public service announcement (PSA) or public service ad, but the simplified version of PSAs are messages in the public interest disseminated by the media without charge, with the objective of raising awareness, changing public attitudes and behaviour towards a social issue."     - Wikipedia Definition

This week you will be completing a Public Service Announcement in IMovie.

Grading is as follows:

     The Public Service Announcement must use a minimum of 20 pictures or video clips

     PSA must be no less than 30 seconds in length and no more than 1:00 minute in length

     PSA must have smooth transitions between pictures

     PSA must use at least one piece of music.  If more, smooth transitions between sound bites

     PSA must have at least 6 facts about your topic
    
     PSA must be published (SHARE) as a movie file and viewable by Media Players

Following is the grading outline:
          30 points for neatness (smooth transitions)
          40 points for completeness  (All items present)
          10 points for within time limits
          20 points for partner review

Getting Started (from Center For DIGITAL Education Website)

1. Choose your topic. Pick a subject that is important to you, as well as one you can visualize. Keep your focus narrow and to the point. More than one idea confuses your audience, so have one main idea per PSA.
    
2. Time for some research - you need to know your stuff! Try to get the most current and up to date facts on your topic. Statistics and references can add to a PSA. You want to be convincing and accurate.
    
3. Consider your audience. Are you targeting parents, teens, teachers or some other social group? Consider your target audience's needs, preferences, as well as the things that might turn them off. They are the ones you want to rally to action. The action suggested by the PSA can be almost anything. It can be spelled out or implied in your PSA, just make sure that message is clear.
    
4. Grab your audience's attention. You might use visual effects, an emotional response, humor, or surprise to catch your target audience. Be careful, however, of using scare tactics. Attention getters are needed, but they must be carefully selected. For example, when filming a PSA about controlling anger, a glass-framed picture of a family can be shattered on camera. This was dramatic, but not melodramatic. Staging a scene between two angry people to convey the same idea is more difficult to do effectively.
    
5. Create a script and keep your script to a few simple statements. A 30-second PSA will typically require about 5 to 7 concise assertions. Highlight the major and minor points that you want to make. Be sure the information presented in the PSA is based on up-to-date, accurate research, findings and/or data.
    
6. Storyboard your script.
    
7. Film your footage and edit your PSA.
    
8. Find your audience and get their reaction. How do they respond and is it in the way you expected? Your goal is to call your audience to action. Are they inspired?

IMovie Personal Marquise Project

For your Introduction to IMovie:

You will be making a number of movies with Apple IMovie during this class.  Starting next week you will work on creating a Public Service Announcement (PSA) with a partner.  Start thinking of ideas now so you will be able to pick something for next week.

Watch the following clip on your own to get ideas about your Personal Movie Marquis.  This is a short movie clip (10-15 seconds) that you will add to the end of your PSA to "sign" it.  The Movie Marquis you are creating should be a reflection of your personality, and is intended to let people know who created the movie it follows.  It can be used at the end or the beginning of a movie.  I want you to pretend you are creating a Movie Production Studio and give some thought to the kind of movies and messages you would like to support.  Be creative and have fun with this project.  It can be serious, funny or anything you want it to be.  Please make sure you use the clip you created in GarageBand for this project.  You may find pictures and other video clips online or sign out a camera.  I have a limited amount of equipment, so you will have to share.

Please create a Movie Marquis in IMovie.  It should be 10 to 15 seconds long and use audio, pictures/video, titles and effects.  You must create your music for this project with GarageBand.  You may not use commercially available music.  When you have edited the movie and created it, please use the SHARE function and EXPORT video to the desktop.  Upload that file to your Google Drive and share it with me for credit for the project.

I hope everyone has as nice a weekend as I did.  When you come into class, please click the link to the left (Keyboarding Practice) or log into TypingWeb.com and practice your typing for 5 minutes, or until we get started.

Next,  please go to School District of Philadelphia LOGIN Page (Click Here) and use the Username & Password listed on the index cards to LOGIN to your StudentNet Accounts.

ASSIGNMENT:
Please add the following GOALS to your Individual Learning Plan on StudentNet

LT1 - Long Term Goal 1 should be a future career or college you want to go to and why
LT2 - Long Term Goal 2 should be your goal for the end of this school year
ST1 - Short Term Goal 1 should be something you can do this month to help reach LT2
ST2 - Short Term Goal 2 should be something you can change this week to help you improve.

Goals should follow the SMART outline.  Make sure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. 

You must list at least two (2) BARRIERS to reaching each of your Short Term Goals.  Barriers can be Internal (you can change your habits to help yourself), or External (things that may be out of your control that you need help to change).

Finally,  you must list a STRATEGY for overcoming each BARRIER.  Your STRATEGY must be realistic and achievable.  

The worksheet is not necessarily set-up for the assignment listed above.  Please complete the worksheet completely prior to signing online.  It helps to really be truthful to yourself about your abilities and limitations, and make sure you are doing your best to be honest about what you want to achieve.  The more specific your goals, the easier it will be to complete this assignment.  Start with your Long Term Goals, then Short Term Goals, then your Barriers and Strategies to overcome them.  This exercise will help you to apply to High Schools and in the future.  It is a good idea to follow these steps whenever you have to make a plan for something (Job, Family, Budget, Volunteering, Sports, or anything else you want to improve throughout your life.)

Mrs. Cohen will be joining us to help you learn to use StudentNet and to provide you with some information about your Individual Learning Plan online.  We will be helping you while you navigate through this site.

Assignment:
Use the Philadelphia Notebook to identify High Schools you are interested in applying for.  Use your Student ID and Password for StudentNet.  Use the information on StudentNet to fill out the worksheet for your Counseling Folder.  Find your 7th Grade Final Grades for Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies.  Find your Attendance Records and other Information on the form.  Do research about the schools you are interested in.  Finish the forms on the cover of your Counseling Folder and the High School Application and Return the folder to Mrs. Cohen. 

Please follow the instructions given by Mrs. Cohen over the next few days to help you start the application process for High School Selection.  We will be working on StudentNet and High School Applications in Computer Science Class until Thursday.

Friday and next week we will begin IMovie.  Follow along and please take the next few days seriously. The high school you attend can be critical in helping decide on a college or future career.  We are here to help you make the best decision you can.

We Are Back!!  Everyone is encouraged to visit my site
Random Acts Of Literacy

I started this website and movement in 2011 while on the train home.  I hope it spreads to teachers and other commuting professionals nationwide.  I envision local groups teamed up with independent book stores to help provide books and donations to keep this going! 

At the very least, keep a book in your bag during the commute to or from work and give it anonymously to a child to read.  Make sure to write randomactsofliteracy.org in the books so they know to pass them on!

Typing / Catch Up Day

Everyone:

Today you will use the time in class to catch up on any outstanding work.  Please start by signing in to your TypingWeb.com account and spending at least 10-minutes working on your typing skills.  Complete each section of the Basic Course and take the Section Quizzes at the end of each part.  Make sure you SIT UP STRAIGHT, REST YOUR FINGERS ON THE "HOME KEYS", AND USE ONLY THE FINGERS THAT ARE LISTED TO HIT THE PROPER KEYS INDICATED.  You are trying to learn to TYPE not just hit keys.  MEMORIZING THE KEYBOARD will also help.  You should get faster and more accurate each day that you practice.

Please spend the balance of your time working on an assignment you might have missed.  You can retake the Internet Safety & Security Quiz to improve your grade, at any time.  I will check the Technology Survey Results and the IS&S Quiz entries again today.  I will also be reviewing my gradebook for omissions and errors.  If you think that your grade is not quite right, come see me and we can discuss it.

Finally,  I have your ENGRADE Username and Password.  Let me know if you need it and I can write it down for you.  In November it will cost you a dollar (to me for the general school fund) to get that information again.  You should all have that information by now and it is important enough to remember or make a note of on your own.

Check out TACKK.COM.  I found this in a magazine on the flight home from a weekend trip.  I thought this would be an interesting and fun way to post information (Like The 8th Grade Project) for school.  You can easily create single page websites for your work.  You could create a single TACKK without logging in, or create a series of TACKK's.  Please go to the website TACKK.COM to get started.  Make sure you add the TAG (caatech) to all of your sites so we can see them.

Peace Day Project

Please go to Tackk.com and create a website for Peace Day 2013.  Create an account using your Gmail address and a password you can remember.  You may use photos, youtube video links, and other items.  Please make sure your website has the following items to receive credit for this project today:

1. Website must be created using Tackk.com
2. Website must include keywords #xroadsatmeade and #peaceday2013
3. Website must have at least one picture
4. Website must include a link to your Weebly.com Website
5. Website must include a contact/message form
6. Website must have a Peace Day Theme
7. Website must include at least 4-5 sentences on how you will "increase the peace" in your own way.  Please describe how you can help the world, our community, or your family be more aware of peaceful ways to resolve issues and be kinder to each other.

Habit # 1 - "Be Proactive" & Typing Week

We will start today by creating a journal entry after discussing Habit #1 from the 7-Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey).  Please pay attention to the information and answer the following questions in your Journal (Weebly.com).  If you missed our discussion, please download and view the link (Habit #1 Video) to the left.

How will you try to "carry the weather with you" from now on.  What can you do to encourage others to see this as an important first step in being more mature? 

When you are finished with your journal entry, please go to the following website and take the typing test (1 minute, any topic you like, send your results in an email to me):

Next, go to http://typingweb.com, and create an account.  Go to START TYPING and begin the lesson with the HOME KEYS.  Spend the rest of the class time working on your typing skills.

Tomorrow there will be worksheets to help you get better at typing.  Sit up straight, fingers on the home keys, and really try to learn to type.  This is a skill you will use forever!

More GarageBand

All:

Now that you have a basic idea how to navigate around the GarageBand application, please create a music track at least 25 seconds long for use in an IMovie project coming up.  You need to use at least three different loops to create the song.  I would suggest Percussion, Bass, and any other loop of your choice.  It can be slow or fast and have any theme you like.  Try to create it to reflect your personality or have a mood of some kind.  It can be scary, funny, happy, sad, melodramatic, suspenseful, or just plain.  When you are finished creating the music track you must SHARE it by EXPORTing it to DISK.  Place it on your desktop as an MP3 file.  Now you are ready to open your GDrive and UPLOAD the file online.  Once you have finished the UPLOAD, please SHARE the MP3 file with me by hitting the SHARE button and entering my email address.  You should also COPY the web address (Top Of The Share Box) and change the Permission for this file to ANYONE WITH LINK.  You can now put a link to this file on your Weebly.com Website by adding a word or picture and applying a link.  I will show everyone how to do this in class.

Follow these steps in class to complete this assignment:

1. Open GarageBand
2. Click NEW PROJECT
3. Open LOOPS Project
4. Create Music with at least 3 loops (minimum)
5. Save Project to Desktop (Create a File on desktop for your stuff)
6. Click SHARE above project and select EXPORT TO DISK
7. EXPORT an MP3 Version of your music to Desktop
8. Open Web Browser (Firefox)
9. Sign In To GDRIVE
10. Click the RED UP ARROW next to the CREATE button
11. Upload your MP3 to your GDrive
12. Click the new file listed in your GDrive
13. Click the SHARE button.
14. Change WHO HAS ACCESS to Anyone With Link
15. Add hscribnercaa@gmail.com to SHARE email list on bottom.
16. COPY link for file at top of SHARE box.
17. Open new Tab in Browser
18. Open Weebly.com Website and Sign In
19. Open your Weebly.com Website in Edit Mode
20. On your HOME Page drag a New TITLE Box into the Home Page
21. Type Garageband MP3 then drag the cursor over the words to highlight it.
22. Look for the LINK symbol in the Toolbar.
23. Click it and PASTE your weblink (From SHARE Page) into the box.
24. Check the box for open in New Window
25. Hit OK

Once you are finished with these steps, you should now Publish your website (Yellow PUBLISH Button) in the top, right corner.  Then click the link to your active website and make sure your new link works.  Once your link is active, you have finished today's assignment.

GarageBand Primer

GarageBand Rocks!  I want to make sure that everyone gets a chance to create some custom music for the IMovie project in a couple of weeks.

Steps to help you:
1.  Open Apple's GarageBand Application.
2.  Watch the "Building A Song" (Click For Link)
3.  Use the HELP section with the class on the Main Screen
4.  Use the headphones to listen to GarageBand while you create a personal track.
5.  Try to create a track that is 10-15 seconds long
6.  Use the instruments listed in the Loop Browser.
7.  Look in the SHARE drop down list to EXPORT your work to the desktop.
8.  You might want to Upload it to your GDrive so you do not lose it.

I hope you enjoy the next couple weeks in class.  Next week we are Keyboarding/Typing, creating Peace Day Websites, and then on to IMovie!

Today you will take the Internet Security and Safety Quiz posted below.  If you missed the lesson, I have posted the Presentation online using Google Docs and my link list below.  Click the link for the ISS and watch the show if you are confused.  You may use your previous answers on your email by looking in your SENT box on your GMAIL.  You may also use the presentation online to search for the answers.  When you are finished taking the quiz, you may quietly work on your Weebly.com website.

Internet Safety & Security Presentation Day

Today we will be discussing Internet Safety & Security issues in depth.

Start with a quick Journal Post (Weebly.com) about the 12x12x12 Impressions located at the bottom of the Posts here on the website.  Hint:  Scan to the bottom of the page and look for where the background changes to flat grey.  Journal about what you think this passage means to you?  How have you noticed, in hindsight, this idea in action? 

Please use the Powerpoint (CLICK HERE) online to study for tomorrow's Test.  You will be tested on items from the book "lol...OMG" by Matt Ivester and from items in today's presentation.  We will work on GarageBand at the end of the week.
